It was in 2001 when the Laguna II, a saloon designed to embody 'lifestyle' driving, came into production. It was a time of tremendous innovation and an array of new features features which helped customers enjoy their vehicle to the fullest.
However, the occupants of these cars still had to utilize keys to open and close their doors. This was a major problem for many and Renault engineers determined to address it.
They decided to put the use of a contactless card into their vehicles, and then develop an application that would allow motorists to unlock and start their vehicles by waving their hands. The result is the key card, that is now found on a majority of Renault vehicles. Whether it's located in the ignition barrel, or the centre console the car will unlock when the card approaches and will lock automatically when moved away. Luckily, the product lead on Laguna II, Bernard Dumondel was in a hotel at the time, and used his room key to open his car. He was of the opinion that keys for cars could be created using the same magnetic strip as the key.
In the years to follow the card was hailed as an innovative invention and is now found on two out of three Renault vehicles. Renault has chosen to use the new features of smartphones to improve the hands-free card, even the fact that it appears they are about to replace it.

It can't be used to unlock the doors or start the engine from outside the vehicle, unless it is activated by the driver. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are set up to determine whether the key is inside or outside. The key will work from a distance to turn on the ignition of the car, but not to unlock the doors, which is to ensure your safety.
The second is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system use the rolling-code. This lowers the likelihood of the security being breached by someone who intercepts and retransmits a control message to gain access but isn't a guarantee of avoiding the risk completely. [1]
